Best Paint for Kitchen Cabinets

I’ve been painting furniture, cabinets, molding, anything I can get my hands on for many years now. I LOVE paint because it has such transformative power. I have taken some of the oldest, dingiest, ugliest pieces of furniture, and brought them back to life with paint. It is a decorators best friend!
Now, as for what paint I have found serves me well. That would be Sherwin Williams ProClassic. I have used it for years and it sprays well and brushes well. I ALWAYS prefer to use a paint sprayer. I just like the finish it gives. So generally I spray the ProClassic. I like that it’s water-based, so it’s not a huge pain to clean up, but it gives a nice hard finish when it dries.

I sometimes choose a Satin finish, just because I like a little more of a matte finish with white painted furniture. Generally speaking, semi-gloss is a good durable finish for furniture, cabinets, or trim. Especially if they will be in a an area that is experiencing traffic, or lots of little fingerprints. Regarding kitchen cabinets, I would definitely go with semi-gloss because of the wear and tear a kitchen gets.
ProClassic is not cheap as far as paint goes. I have a little tip. I usually try to buy it when they have a 40% sale. Our local Sherwin Williams store will let me buy it and take it back at a later time to be tinted. I usually will stock up when it’s on sale. Just remember that not all colors use the same base. So, if you are thinking black, or a dark color, you’ll need a darker base. Light colors, light base.
Oil-based paint is one option for painting cabinets that many painters opt for, however, if you are painting your cabinets white, oil-based paint can yellow over time, which is why I like Pro-classic. Be prepared though. White paint gets knicked and shows some wear over time. Even white painted cabinets from a cabinet manufacturer will show some wear over time. I actually like the idea of painting cabinets myself, because I can go back with a brush and touch up areas. I painted the molding in my house, and occasionally I’ll walk around with a brush and touch up spots. There are just things you need to be prepared for with white cabinets. But, they brighten and update a space so much. White cabinets are so stunning. I think it us definitely worth the upkeep.
Here are some projects that I’ve painted with Proclassic paint.

Throughout the years, I’ve painted many, many more things with this paint, but that is a sampling. Good luck painting!
Take care,
